Making artefacts more accessible

Museums have traditionally displayed historical artefacts in glass display cases which limit visitors’ opportunity to examine them in detail.  Technology can provide a solution to this problem.  On 7th May 2019 Nick Rushby (APCT), Cliff Ward (Otford and District Archaeological Group) and Anne Sassin (Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme) met with Lloyd Bosworth of the University of Kent to look at possibilities of laser scanning and photogrammetry for creating virtual models of these artefacts that can be displayed on screens – and on websites like this one.

When the Palace opens as an interpretation centre for the Darent Valley, we hope that visitors will be able to use this technology to gain a better understanding of artefacts and set them into their proper context.
