A geophysical examination of Palace Field in 2013 indicated the presence of buried foundation in the Great Inner Court. These were not aligned with the Tudor Palace and the assumption was made that this was the remains of an earlier building that had been demolished to make way for the Palace. An archaeological investigation in later April 2025 uncovered the foundations of an aisled building dated around 1250-1350. A more exact date should be forthcoming in late 2025.
